Coptic Christian Cave Sanctuaries, Gheralta Mountains
Ethiopia - North February 2024
Rising dramatically from the semi-arid Hawzen Plain in northern Ethiopia on the border of Tigray, the Gheralta Mountains are a striking landscape of steep, weathered sandstone cliffs, jagged pinnacles, and towering, flat-topped table mountains known locally as ambas. Stark and amazing, this range is defined by its deep ochre and fiery red rock formations, shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion into a fortress-like terrain. The Gheralta is an extraordinary integration of natural grandeur and ancient spirituality, with Africa's largest concentration of cliff-face, rock-hewn churches. Carved directly into the stone between the 4th and 15th centuries, these still-active Coptic sanctuaries are much older and more humble than the (amazing) 12th-13th sanctuaries in the well-known Lalibela region. Cave sanctuaries such as Maryam Korkor and Abune Yemata Guh (the highest and most perilous ) are quiet, daily-functioning places of Christian Coptic worship containing fabulous frescoes (that either withstood intact the invasions of the 10th and 16th centuries or where subsequently repainted and re-consecrated 1000-1500 years ago), monastic traditions, and early Christian heritage.
(Ethiopia is wonderful, intriguing and instructive for nature conservation and cultural integration. It also has specific yet changing challenges of local and regional tensions.
